Default Daytona wheels

2 questions:

a) Would you consider to put Borranis on your Daytona at all, or wouldn't you because of the high wheel destroying torques forces ? (Actually Ferrari had them as an official option in the 70's) ?

b) Where can 9'' and 10'' Comodoras be ordered ?

I was "visualizing" to have 2 different wheelsets on my Daytona, 1 with the usual XWX Michelin tires and the other one with some more modern tires like the Dunlop racing tires (not slicks of course). XWX's would go on the Borranis or 8'' and 9'' Comodoras and Dunlop's would go on the 8'', 9'' or 10'' Comodoras. I do not plan to go on the track at all, but would consider some more grip to the twisty Swiss alp curves as welcomed for next summer. I remember throwing Vitalones 308 around the hairpins....and that was fun. Of course, the Daytona is a different animal but I'm sure some more grip would also represent some passiv security.

Any thoughts ?

It sounds like quite a good idea. Please let me know what you decide as I will likely do the same.

Sounds good to me, Rolf, if your purpose is better grip with the older, oriiginal tires. Personally, for me, Borranis are for the Daytona Spyder and older cars, purely appearance considerations. As long as you do not track and push the car to the upper limits, there should be no problem. One another consideration you may wish to factor in is the overall dead weight of the two wheels. I do not know which is lighter but this factor may be of interest if you wish better handling. Good luck with your decisions. w/ smiles Jimmy

Guys, here's some info which i believe is right. As i have just been through the same process.

Borrine wheels can only be bought new in 7&1/2 fronts and 9 inch rears, they do not make 8 inch anymore so i was told. [ they might make a special order though].
10 inch would be too wide for the back with much wider tyres.
If you do fit modern tyres on the 9inch wheels you will have to watch the clearance as the old XWX have a high profile and taper in a lot and they only just clear. The same thing go's for Cromodora tyre wise.

You cannot get Cromodora wheels any more, just used ones. Eurospares sell new repro 9 inch wheels.
The repro. wheels do not have the Cromodora, or Ferrari 9x15 on them as the real ones do, so they are no good to show, don't forget you add the cost of spine's and covers to them.
real 9 inch wheels are ultra rare, i do have a set for sale on F-chat, but i would only use them for show or light road work as they are over 30 years old.

Rolf: The Borrani design and metallurgy reached its limits with the rapidly increased horsepower and tire adhesion of the street cars of the 70s. For that reason Ferrari far earlier had sidelined wires in their competition cars and substituted alloys. Today, appearance preference is usually the dominant factor, some models really just look right with wires (to my eye 330s) others do not (again to me 275GTBs) others like the Daytonas depend on the color (black and wires is a particularly nice combination). Wires for Daytonas are easily found, they are 7 1/2" RW4075s which were fitted to the Queens, C4s Daytonas and 365GT4s, the alloys were also 7 1/2" all around, the rears occasionally fitted with 9" RW 4300s (even sometimes 8"), you will have to find the right knock offs (bent ears for early US cars, hex for later) and the deep dish wheels require their own, deeper threaded knock off. The biggest issue for the Daytons is the car’s sheer weight. With a high performance modern tire pushed hard, you will run the risk of over stressing a 40+year old alloy to disastrous consequence. My advice is mount the wires with traditional adhesion XWXs for spirited but not hard, hard aggressive cornering , and when you really want to explore the performance envelope of your car do it with the aggressive tires on the alloys. It takes but a few minutes to change out a set (remember they were designed for quick changes in racing) and the best news you won’t have to shine up the wires as often! All the best, M

My sincere thanks to all your very detailed and profound suggestions and thoughts. You guys make this forum a wonderful place to learn from. I do already have the 9'' wheels at the back.
Considering all your comments I guess I will stay with it as it is. No 2nd set and no "try's" and "experiments". Thanks guys...saved some money (for something else).

They look great ! Just out of interest: What is a price indication these days for a pair of 9'' Cromodora wheels as yours ?

Mine are too cheep at £1999.00 no idea what Shaughnessy would want for refurbished wheels.
I think Eurospares want £950, but i am not sure if thats for one or two, plus the splines and bolts around £250 each wheel, plus cover caps £30 each plus VAT at 17.5% on the lot, for repro wheels, that did not look great when i saw them.
Thinking about it, i may as well keep them for now.

Keeping them seems to make sense.

Personally I would not recommend using these Dunlop Racing on the road .

On small roads the car tries to drive you (more than you drive it) If the road is not flat and perfect .

When I went back to XWX the car was much easier to drive, it felt like driving a bicycle compared to the Dunlop ...

On track Dunlop are perfect.

A sage advice from Daytona73. Seems like the period correct tires match the best.
When I bought my Dino, my debate was whether to go with the original Michelins or the newer, modern compound Michelins. Stupid me, I went wth the latter, and as a result, grip is better but too much for this car. Soon, I shall replace with the original tires. w/ smiles Jimmy

+1, I ran a BB on both XWXs and more modern tires. The originally were much better suited to the cars set up.
