Hi everyone I'm very new to this site. I'm intrested in buying a 308 GTS from US which has a 5 digit serial number. I need to trace that car's history but I cannot using this number as the common 17 digit VIN number is required. My questions are. Is there anothe 17 digit VIN number which includes the 5 digit one? If there's not, how can I find out info about it? Is there a database somewhere about all 308s? Your experience would help. Thank you. |

Your 5 digit number consists of the ultimate 5 digits of the full 17 digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). You should be able to reconstruct the full number using what's in the following thread: http://www.ferrarilife.com/forums/sh...ad.php?p=81262 There are quite a few VIN databases around, a.o. for 308s. Someone here struck a deal with Ferrari Market Letter which may be of interest to you: http://www.ferrarilife.com/forums/sh...813#post100813 A horse is a horse, of course, of course, and no one can talk to a horse of course. That is, of course, unless the horse is the famous Mister F. |

the 17 digit VIN started approx. 1980 so it is quite possible yours is still the 5 digit. There's a 308 GTB register here: http://www.r-design.net/308/index_e.html for 308 QV here: http://www.308qvregister.com/WebMain...20page%202.htm for 308 GT4 http://www.dino-gt4-registry.com/ the 308 GTS has been left in cold so far. best Jurgen I can resist everything except temptation. -- Oscar Wilde

Tracing the history of the car can be done through the aforementioned registries, forums (like this one), and established database authorities (like the Ferrari Market Letter). Once the DMV (employee) can pull up the car in their system (assuming it's been registered in the US before now), they can (might) provide limited data pertaining to the car's past locations of registration, issuance of a salvage title, etc.

I'm sure your Department of Motor Vehicles is well aware of smaller serial numbers for older cars. If not they have the ability to readily look it up. Give them a call. Capt. Pete '79 308 GTS, '82 Jeep CJ7 Jamboree "Time is what prevents everything from happening all at once."

| What's the serial number? The serial number is what you'll use to register the car - in some cases, the DMV requires something a little longer, so you give them the chassis type plus the serial number (e.g., F106AS30687) - but it's not a "VIN" nor can a "VIN" (a 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number) be supposed for a car that was built before VINs were being applied.
